Father James Wall Bursary

The Father James Wall Bursary was established in 2003 to honour the founder of the Catholic Development Fund (CDF), Father James ‘Jim’ Wall. The bursary recognises the achievements of Year 10 Catholic secondary school students who, like Father Wall, go above-and-beyond in their day-to-day activities.

Each year the Bursary is awarded to a small group of Year 10 Catholic secondary school students who have demonstrated leadership potential in a range of areas including academia, arts, sporting activities, community service and social justice activities. The successful students are each awarded a $4,000 Bursary through the generous support of CDF in conjunction with the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools, Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Ltd and Catholic Education WA Bunbury Diocese. The Bursary assists with school fees and expenses incurred by the recipients while undertaking Year 11 and 12 in a Catholic secondary school. A total of 6 Bursaries are awarded each year, with 4 allocated to Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools, 1 for Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Ltd and 1 for Catholic Education WA in the Diocese of Bunbury.

Applications for the awards are delivered to the Diocese Catholic Education Office where a judging panel carefully selects the successful recipients according to specific criteria, including:

  • Demonstrate a high degree of leadership in school and the community and be seen by their school community to be inclusive, cooperative and committed to making a difference.
  • Demonstrate leadership potential in a range of areas, focusing on the student’s willingness to coordinate and organize these activities in a self-directed manger.
  • Demonstrate an emphasis on helping others and providing service to others, e.g. coaching, fundraising, environmental protection, hospitality services, assisting people with disabilities, involvement in parish and or local council activities.

Each year, the presentation of awards is held in Term 1, to recognise the achievements of these students over the past academic year. The student’s families, school staff and members of Catholic Education and CDF come together to acknowledge the successful recipients and congratulate them on their achievement.

Information about the Bursary can be obtained by contacting the Catholic Education Office or emailing CDF at feedback@melbcdf.org.au.
